EMDR Therapy in Virginia Beach and Across Virginia

Come home to yourself

Sometimes trauma doesn’t look dramatic from the outside.

It can look like overthinking, emotional numbness, burnout, panic, people-pleasing, difficulty trusting yourself, or feeling like your nervous system is always “on.” Many people carry painful experiences for years without realizing how deeply those experiences continue to shape the way they move through relationships, work, rest, and daily life.

EMDR therapy helps the brain process distressing experiences so you can move forward with greater clarity, peace, and connection.

At Restorative Mental Health, we provide trauma-informed EMDR therapy in Virginia Beach and virtually across Virginia.

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy approach designed to help the brain reprocess distressing memories and experiences that may still feel emotionally “stuck.”

Trauma is not only about what happened to you — it is also about what your nervous system learned it needed to do to survive.

Many clients come to therapy feeling:

  • emotionally overwhelmed

  • chronically anxious

  • disconnected from themselves

  • reactive in relationships

  • stuck in survival mode

  • unable to fully rest

  • highly self-critical

  • emotionally numb

EMDR works by helping the brain and nervous system process painful experiences in a way that reduces emotional intensity and creates more flexibility, regulation, and self-trust.

You may benefit from EMDR therapy if…

  • You feel stuck in patterns you logically understand but still cannot change

  • You experience anxiety, panic, or nervous system overwhelm

  • You replay painful memories or conversations repeatedly

  • You struggle with emotional numbness or disconnection

  • You experienced childhood trauma, emotional neglect, or relational wounds

  • You notice people-pleasing, perfectionism, or difficulty setting boundaries

  • You feel “on edge” even when things are objectively okay

  • You carry shame that feels difficult to let go of

  • You feel emotionally exhausted from constantly coping

Our approach to EMDR

At Restorative Mental Health, we believe trauma work should feel collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in safety.

Our clinicians approach EMDR through a trauma-informed and relational lens. We prioritize nervous system regulation, emotional safety, pacing, and trust throughout the process. We understand that healing is not about forcing yourself to relive painful experiences. Instead, it is about helping your mind and body feel less stuck in them.

Several of our clinicians are fully trained in EMDR or are currently completing advanced EMDR training.

EMDR for anxiety, burnout, and relationship patterns

Many people are surprised to learn that EMDR can help with more than obvious trauma.

EMDR therapy can also address:

  • chronic anxiety

  • burnout

  • relationship difficulties

  • attachment wounds

  • perfectionism

  • emotional overwhelm

  • panic attacks

  • self-esteem struggles

  • people-pleasing

  • grief and loss

Trauma can shape the way we relate to ourselves, others, and the world around us. EMDR can help reduce the emotional charge connected to those experiences so you can respond to life from a more grounded and connected place.

Frequently asked questions

Does EMDR work for anxiety?

Yes. Many clients use EMDR to address anxiety, panic, chronic stress, and nervous system dysregulation connected to past experiences and current triggers.

Do I need to talk about every traumatic memory in detail?

Not necessarily. EMDR does not require clients to verbally process every detail of a painful experience.

Is virtual EMDR effective?

Yes. EMDR can often be adapted effectively for virtual therapy depending on a client’s needs and circumstances.

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

A clinician can help assess whether EMDR may be an appropriate fit based on your goals, symptoms, and history.
